Robert Lee Sims Helping Hand Scholarship

Southern Illinois University is an equal opportunity employer and will not discriminate against any person the the basis of race, national origin, or sex in violation of Title VII.

Robert Lee Sims, the former Assistant Director of the Minority Engineering Program and an alumnus of the Proactive Recruitment for Multicultural Professionals for Tomorrow (PROMPT) and the Diversifying Higher Education Faculty in Illinois (DFI) fellowship programs, passed away in January 2009. Robert unselfishly gave of his time to provide tutorial assistance in statistics to undergraduate and graduate students and was especially helpful to the recipients who received scholarships sponsored by the Underserved Fellowship Office of the Graduate School. The PROMPT Endowment Fund honors his memory by making this award in his name.

Two (2) $350.00 awards will be provided during the Fall 2009 semester based on need. The award will be available to any currently enrolled, full-time PROMPT, Graduate Dean's, or Walker Fellow. The award amount is placed in the recipient’s Bursar account. Tuition, fees and any outstanding charges such as parking or housing fees will be deducted from the award before a check is issued for the remaining net amount. Students with existing financial aid award packages may find that this award will reduce some of their existing aid. Consult with the SIUC Financial Aid Office to determine how your financial aid package may be affected.

Students must:

  • Be a current or former recipient of one of the following fellowship programs: Proactive Recruitment of Multicultural Professionals for Tomorrow, Graduate Dean’s, Bridge to the Doctorate, or Dr. James E. Walker Presidential Scholarship.
  • Have at least one semester of study remaining.
  • Be currently enrolled for at least six (6) graduate credit hours.
